Glucose is the most important of the sugars, affecting carbohydrate metabolism. The glucose load test (10 hours after the last meal) and the daily blood glucose profile are tests that reflect the efficiency of sugar metabolism. The kidneys excrete sugar only when the so-called renal threshold is exceeded, i.e. when the concentration in urine exceeds 180mg%.
Significance of the test: assessment of carbohydrate metabolism, diagnosis and evaluation of the effectiveness of diabetes treatment. Abnormal values of glucose: with improper, excessive nutrition, family tendencies, in diabetes, in diseases of the pancreas, with infections, injuries, myocardial infarction, pregnancy, in stress.
