Detailed information on HIV testing:

  • Important
Samples brought in from outside (applies to individual patients) are not accepted for testing.
  • Description
Screening test for HIV infection - human immunodeficiency virus. The HIV virus belongs to the retroviruses and is transmitted sexually (through intercourse with an infected person), or by transfusion of infected blood, through the use of needles contaminated with the blood of infected persons (drug users) and the placenta or blood during childbirth (perinatal infection), as well as with breast milk. The incubation period ranges from 0.5 to 3 or even more years. Specific antibodies can appear as early as 3-8 weeks. Due to the specificity of the immune response, which is an individual factor, it is recommended to perform the test 12 weeks after the occurrence of the potentially infectious situation.Specific antibodies are used to diagnose AIDS and HIV carriage.
Any reactive or doubtful screening test result must be confirmed by Western blot or genetic test.

In the case of diagnostic difficulties with obtaining a result caused by factors beyond the Laboratory's control (e.g. the presence of interfering factors in the sample), the patient may be asked to repeat the blood sampling.

In some cases, due to e.g. limitations of the testing method, it is not possible to give a final result by the Laboratory. In such situations, the HIV test result is communicated to the patient by an authorised doctor, who provides all the information concerning the result and further procedure.
