Surgery for obesity

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the treatment of obesity. Bariatric treatment consists of non-operative and operative methods. Non-operative methods include diet, exercise, gastric balloon inserted endoscopically. Operative methods include surgical stomach reduction.

Obesity is a disease with very complex causes and requires complex treatment. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to assess body weight in general.
It is calculated as follows: divide body weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.

Formula for calculating BMI:

BMI = body weight (kg) / height (m)2

BMI - Interpretation of the result

  • < 16.0 - starvation
  • 16.0 - 16.9 - emaciation
  • 17.0 - 18.5 - underweight
  • 18.5 - 24.9 - normal weight
  • 25.0 - 29.9 - overweight
  • 30,0 - 34,9 - stage I obesity
  • 35,0 - 39,9 - grade II obesity
  • ≥ 40 - grade III obesity
